Lead rope in her left hand and lunge line draped over the other shoulder, Rowan walked into the round pen leading the high strung young bay mare behind her who while well behaved was nearly bouncing out of her skin. Latching the gate behind her, Rowan laughed gently as Revenge shoved her head against the girl's shoulder. Having owned the mare from birth, Rowan knew more than a few things about her habits and her behavior. Unlatching the halter, Rowan switched to the lunge line and walked to the middle of the round pen. She'd found with the three year old it was best to work her down a bit before ever climbing on the dynamo's back. While a great horse, Revenge was high strung and overly energetic at times. It was safer for rider and horse if she practiced her manners in the round pen before being put under saddle. Gently, Rowan coaxed Revenge out into a bigger circle and clicked her tongue to get the mare into a trot, after allowing her a few rounds around the pen, Rowan forced her to switch directions and slow and speed up for a few minutes until the horse was just beginning to sweat. Slowly, Rowan brought Revenge down to a walk and smiled as the horse huffed and blew air through her nose. Now she was ready for real training. Now with all tack on, Rowan swung up on Revenge and trotted her quickly around the arena. Loving the feel of the young horse under her, Rowan asked for and was given a trot from Revenge. These were the times that Rowan missed the farm there was no cattle for Revenge to work in this arena, so Rowan concentrated on putting Revenge through her basic paces and doing figure eights in the arena to keep Revenge focused on what they were doing. Finally Rowan backed the Revenge into one wall of the arena and with the picture of barrels in her mind started the mare off. Galloping forward, the small mare made quick steps covering massive amounts of ground before slowing and leaning into turn around an object only her rider could see. That was the beauty of Revenge for the right rider she'd do anything. Revenge

With a whistle, Rowan walked into the outdoor paddock, Revenge was staying in. The mare picked her head up and without further encouragement came running up to her rider putting on the brakes moment before coming up. With a snort, she pushed her nose into the human's pocket asking for her treat. With a laugh, Rowan fished out a treat and allowed Revenge to have it as she snapped the halter onto the horse. Leading the horse toward the fence, Rowan had decided to work on gait changes and flying lead changes today since she'd noticed lately that Revenge's changes had gotten sloppy and were not as crisp as they should be.
After the traditional pre-workout lunge line work, Rowan tacked up the bay mare in her traditional black saddle with flower inlay, breast collar, and black bridle with the same inlay on the face pieces. It wasn't the greatest looking ensemble but it worked for the little bay mare and helped to show more of the horse and draw less attention to her rider. Wearing a ratty t-shirt, holey jeans, and worn boots, Rowan didn't look much like a classy rider but during a competition she really cleaned up. Leading the mare into the indoor arena, Rowan gently coaxed Revenge into a trot and then into a lope before asking her to change leads and switch directions multiple times. Rowan was still learning to time Revenge's stride and the timing of the change. It was imperative that it come off fluid and natural even though at times it wasn't. Revenge tended to lead off from the right and begrudingly switched to the left only after being asked and the pressure of conforming being kept on. After awhile, Rowan was satisfied that they were making some progress and decided to call it quits for the day on Revenge.

Rowan decided to take the young mare to the outdoor arena today and expose her to more distractions than the indoor arena could provide alone. As she led the mare out, other horses ran back and forth in their paddocks and whinnied in greeting. Always the socialite, Revenge swept her head up and whinnied back. Rowan wondered for a moment if she'd made a bad choice bringing the young one outside. As Rowan saddled the young horse, the mare switched her weight back and forth as she watched the other horses. The raven haired girl resigned herself to working the high strung mare out more on the lunge line than in the saddle today. It would take awhile to get the mare's attention.
Once the horse was set up, Rowan began to coax her into a walk and then a trot, making Revenge change pace or direction everytime she looked away or was distracted by the other horses. If Revenge was ever going to be ready for bigger shows than just the grade ones they were doing now, she had to keep her mind on work when it was time to work. Finally, the horse began to really concentrate on her rider and Rowan allowed her to slow and cool a bit before climbing on her back. Knowing she'd already worked the young mare pretty hard, Rowan kept the ring workout to walking trotting and a couple of lead changes for twenty minutes before dismounting, untacking the horse, and leading her back inside to be cleaned up.
